Kaizen is partnering with the Jordan Ministries of Education and Public Works and Housing to enhance the quality of and access to education for students.
Despite efforts of the government and development community to support education, the Jordanian school system faces significant challenges in providing quality educational environments to its students, due in part to poor school infrastructure planning and maintenance. School systems and buildings are overburdened and poorly maintained—disproportionately so in low-income, low-resourced areas—and the increasing population of school-aged children due to migration and refugee resettlement is straining already scarce resources.

- Establish 300 new, accessible schools within five years
- Modify 420 schools to make them accessible

The Enhancing School Management and Planning (ESMP) project, funded by USAID , is committed to collaborating with Government of Jordan to improve school management and planning processes. Through ESMP, Kaizen focuses on enhancing the quality of the school environments in Jordan by improving the planning, oversight, operation, and maintenance capabilities of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
To achieve this, Kaizen collaborates with governmental and nongovernmental actors on opportunities for improvement in school planning, decision-making, infrastructure, procurement, construction management, and school operations. In addition, we are improving the school system by:
- Conducting annual comprehensive facility audits of all publicly owned schools to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement
- Organizing a diverse group of change agents who will analyze the data and design solutions
- Providing training, technical assistance, and mentoring to support change implementation
- Promoting “communities of practice” as a framework to build sustainable knowledge transfer
Kaizen prioritizes gender, disability, and environmental considerations as critical cross-cutting issues to be addressed in the project’s scope of work. To account for more equitable improvement, ESMP has incorporated a plan to identify gender gaps and recommend improvements. This includes school renovations and improvements designed to accommodate students and others who are differently abled.
Together, we have been able to achieve important milestones in improving the learning environments for hundreds of thousands of students throughout Jordan.
